Focus on North Las Vegas
Here's a few of the many community improvement project planned for North Las Vegas, one of the top 5 fastest growing cities in the United States.

  • Cheyenne Technology Corridor -- five miles from Decatur Blvd. to Pecos Road and between Gowan Rd. and Evans St. -- a public-private partnership includes nearly two million square feet of mixed use development.  The City's investment of fiber optic cable that runs the length of the CTC is a key element.  The project won the International Economic Development Award in 2003 and has already attracted California Plasticard, Inc., Celebrate Homes, Emory Riddle University, Federal Express, MedicWest Ambulance, Sunterra Corporation, QUALCOMM, Upper Deck and U.S. Foods.

  • University of Nevada Las Vegas --  new 3-square mile campus on federal land near Northern Beltway and I-15.  Educational, community and cultural uses are envisioned to complement residential and business developments planned for the area.

  • Sandstone Ridge Park -- 13-acre, $5.4 million project to include lighted baseball and soccer fields, basketball courts, a skateboard park, walking path and other amenities within the upper plateaus of the Lower Las Vegas Wash Detention Basin.

Is Las Vegas Tap Water Safe To Drink?
While many people prefer the taste of bottled water, tap water is subject to even more-stringent quality standards than bottled water and is tested more frequently.  According to the Southern Nevada Water Authority, in its 2006, Water Quality Report, the Alfred Merritt Smith Water Treatment Facility has been recognized by the National Partnership for Safe Water for its efforts to ensure that Southern Nevada's municipal water meets or surpasses both state and federal water-quality standards.  The taste of the tap water is caused by naturally occurring minerals and chlorine, which is added to protect the water from bacteria.  The water hardness is the result of dissolved calcium and magnesium from the Rocky Mountains, where most of our water begins as snowmelt.   Water is considered hard if the hardness is at least 100 ppm (5.85 grains).  The Las Vegas Valley District's water is about 16 grains per gallon (275 ppm), which is comparable to many Western cities' water supplies. Pregnant women and people with medical conditions affecting their immune system should consult a physician to determine whether a supplemental treatment system is appropriate.  For more information, visit

 Smiles and Grins
This weekend, we’re asking people everywhere to perform at least ONE ACT OF KINDNESS TO ANIMALS, and to report it on the Best Friends website at
http://network.bestfriends.org.   Please encourage your friends and family to join in.  The odometer is already ticking. Let’s see how many thousands of AOK’s (acts of kindness) we can clock up.

A “101 Acts of Kindness” list of suggestions is posted on the Best Friends Network  at http://network.bestfriends.org – in the Resources section.  Here are a few of them:
*  Bake some cat or dog treats and give them to your local rescue group
*  Take an elderly neighbor’s dog for a walk, or help them groom their dog or cat
*  Spend an hour or two at your local shelter or rescue group. Pet the cats, clean litter boxes, spend time with some homeless pets who are least likely to be adopted right away
* Donate yarn and thread to the “Snuggles Project” or knit a cage blanket to donate
*  Make a donation to a local humane group
