"You are successful the moment you start moving toward a worthwhile goal." -- Chuck Carlson
Village concept spreads through Las Vegas Valley -- Several projects are in the works that are built around the village concept...high density housing, walkable streets and neighborhood retail. According to Ken Perlman, vice president of Sullivan Group Real Estate Advisors, urban villages are the next evolution of product in Las Vegas. The Urban Land Institute, a nonprofit education and research institution, refers to these urban, mixed-use developments as 'place-making' products -- about re-creating a sense of place as it relates to the entire community. There are a number of necessary elements required for 'place-making' developments:
1. A comprehensive master plan that evolves over time
2. A mixed-use environment that includes shops, restaurants, movie theatres, offices, hotels, residential, government and public spaces.
3. A plan and design that are sensitive to the geographical location.
4. A pedestrian-friendly environment.
5. A variety of public meeting places.
6. A focus on nighttime, as well as daytime, activities.
7. An emphasis on architectural details.
8. Public gatherings and traditions.
9. A requirement for tax incremental financing of public improvements.
There are approximately a dozen village concepts in some stage of development in Las Vegas currently. Some of the best-known ones include the Village at Centennial Springs in the north, the Curve in the southwest, Urban Village along Las Vegas Blvd. South, East Village on Tropicana Avenue east of the Strip, and Summerlin Centre, ancchored by the under-construction Red Rock Resort.

Road Improvements To Ease Ground Transportation Between Las Vegas and Los Angeles -- A proposed six-lane freeway, now known as E-220 -- will be known as the High Desert Cooridor and will connct Palmdale and Victorville, California. When completed, the $1.5 billion project would give Southern Californians an alternative route to and from Las Vegas via Interstate 5. The completion of the High Desert Corridor is the No. 1 project of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, according to Tom Skancke, the LVCVA's consultant on Southern California transportation. The High Desert Corridor currently is on the federal government's list of priority projects under the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act of 2005 -- A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). Skancke's strategy is to coordinate support for Southern California transportation projects among the various city and county governments in the Inland Empire, which he called the fastest-growing area of the state.

Fischer's Facts about Pest Control -- Here are the facts about three common household pests found in Las Vegas:Black Widow
Black Widow is considered the most venomous spider in North America.
The venom of the black widow spider is 15 times as toxic as the venom of the prairie rattlesnake.
Black Widow spiders are not usually deadly, especially to adults, because they inject only a small amount of venom.
Only the female Black Widow is venomous; males and juveniles are harmless.
The female Black Widow hangs belly upward and rarely leaves the web.
The Black Widow is also called the "hourglass" or "shoe-button" spider.
Brown Recluse
They live in basements, garages, and are sometimes found in other areas of the house.
They like to hide in dark spaces such as cardboard boxes, crevices in walls and on the back of boards.
Items of clothing can also make good hiding spaces for this shy creature.
Dangerous areas include shoes or boots that have not been worn recently or crumpled clothing or bedding, especially when left on the floor.
Scorpions
The venom of scorpions is used for both prey capture and defense.
Scorpion venoms are complex mixtures of neurotoxins (toxins which affect the victim's nervous system) and other substances; each species has a unique mixture.
Despite their bad reputation, only one species in the U.S. and about 20 others worldwide have venom potent enough to be considered dangerous to humans.

If you've ever wondered how to get around those annoying automated phone systems most all major banks and retailers use to screen calls, there's little known codes that let you get past them and go straight to a live operator. Blogger Paul English has posted a comprehensive cheat sheet that offers tricks for finding a live operator at dozens of frequently called companies, including the hard-to-find ones like Amazon.com. His site lists codes that you can dial as soon as the automated system picks up your call so it can be routed directly to a human. It also helps you foil the new breed of customer service hotlines that ask you to say aloud your request. A nifty workaround: Saying the words ''agent'' or ''operator'' will usually redirect you to a live operator at most companies. |
